Drought Damaging Thai Second Rice Crop
The Thailand Rice Millers Association reports that severe drought is producing a reduction in the harvest of Thailand’s dry season rice harvest, which is now underway. The dry season harvest usually accounts for about 5 million metric tons—about 16%-- of Thailand’s annual rice production. The Rice Millers estimate this year’s dry season harvest will be cut to 2 million metric tons—down 3 million metric tons from usual. That will have some effect on Thailand’s export supply—but Thailand has a large reserve and the effect will not be substantial—unless, unless the drought extends into the main rice producing season in the summer and fall.
USDA does not acknowledge drought damage to the Thai rice crop in its current estimates for Thailand—neither do Thai trade sources.
Drought talk, or something, is tending to stabilize Thailand’s rice export quotes.
Quotes reported this week per metric ton fob vessel are: Hom Mali (premium fragrant)--$1,085; Pathumthani (standard fragrant)--$717; White rice 100% grade B--$469; 5%--$438; 25%--$387; A1 super broken--$324; Glutinous White 10%-- $773; Parboiled 100%--$459.
