Rough Rice Cash Market Quiet
The cash market for rough rice is quiet, very little activity in any area. Not much uncommitted rough rice in any area—less than usual in most places. No pressure to buy or sell. Traders are occupied with shipping sales on the books; farmers with completing planting. Buyers, detecting softness in market, are buying hand to mouth—awaiting an expected large new harvest.
In South Louisiana, with large rough rice sales over past two to three weeks, there is now hardly any uncommitted old crop rough rice. Bids for long grain, both old crop and new crop, reported at $17.50/barrel--$10.80/cwt—fob farm basis No 2/62/70. Small here and there selling reported. Larger than usual amount of long grain rough rice being loaded at port of Baton Rouge. New crop developing well—helped by usual daily summer showers.
In Texas, good bit of selling of long grain over past two weeks reported at $4 over loan for non hybrids--$10.47/cwt fob farm basis No 2/55/70—and $3.50 over loan for hybrids. A new survey reported yesterday showed uncommitted supply of long grain in farmers hands at 250,000 to 300,000 cwt—most said to be hybrid rice.
In Mississippi, virtually no activity.
Small long grain sale reported last week $5.15/bushel--$11.44/cwt—fob farm basis No 2/55/70. New crop bids reported at $4.50/bushel--$10/cwt—shipment Sep-Oct; $4.65/bushel--$10.33/cwt—shipment Nov-Dec; no new crop sales reported.
In the upper delta—market described as flat. Buyers bidding hand to mouth. Little to no trading. Small sales of long grain reported this week at $12/cwt delivered barge. Barge loading has resumed on the Mississippi River and movement is active. Sources in northern Arkansas say rice crop conditions are not as good as reported by USDA—wet and cool weather affecting and delaying crop development—good bit of replanting reported. In the medium grain market, inquiries but no trading reported in South. In California, sales of old crop reported at $11 over loan--$17.35/cwt—fob farm basis No 2/55/70. New crop sales reported at $11.25 to $11.50 over loan.
Planting and emergence of the California rice crop have been hampered by wet, cold weather. Crop estimated to be at least 3 weeks behind usual—yields expected to be affected. Acreage planted less than earlier predicted.
