India and Pakistan
The markets here are basically unchanged as the export ban on non-Basmati remains in place in India, and prices mostly steady in Pakistan with most of the export business concentrating on lower quality rice.
IRRI-6 25% is quoted at $325-335 per mt FOB Karachi, which is about where the Viet market is as well. Basmati exports continue on a rampant pace, whilst there does not seem to be any inclination to alter the export ban on the coarse rices, including parboil, in spite of the fact that the 2009 crop estimations are now around 89 million mt (down only 10%). However, as we have mentioned in previous reports that India has made some special exceptions to the ban (like Nepal and Sri Lanka), this week the government announced it will allow 100,000mt of exports to Bangladesh for “diplomatic reasons”.
Most of the Pakistani export activity is keenly focused on container shipments to East Africa, along with border trade with Iran...that is primarily Basmati and a some better quality 5%, which is quite limited given the poor overall quality of this year’s harvest. As regards the weather situation, the outlook for a good monsoon season is positive, and the chance for another bumper crop like we saw in 2008 remains quite likely.
Otherwise, we find these markets rather quiet and the undertone mostly steady.
