USDA Reduces Rice Carryover Estimates
In a move that makes estimates more realistic, and less bearish, USDA this week made changes and lowered carryover estimates for both long grain and medium grain in latest supply/demand estimates for 2009 rice, issued last Friday.
In the new estimates, USDA did not change estimates of supply, but for long grain, increased domestic use by 4.5 mil cwt rough basis, and raised its estimate of exports by 2 mil cwt rough basis. These changes resulted in a reduction of the estimate of carryover of long grain at July 31, 2010 by 6.5 mil cwt, to 15.8 mil cwt rough basis. The new figure is a bit excessive but it is a manageable level, heading in a positive direction.
For medium/short grain, USDA raised estimates of domestic use and exports by 2 mil cwt—each by 1 mil cwt—resulting in a 2 mil cwt reduction of the estimate of carryover. The new carryover estimate for medium/short grain is 14.1 mil cwt rough basis. The new figure is a good bit higher than last year’s estimate of 8.0 mil cwt, which is a minimum figure. We believe the 14.1 mil cwt figure is manageable and will come down further when all facts are in.
USDA also made small adjustments in estimates of average farm prices for 2009 rough rice, going up 15 cents/cwt for long grain to an average of $13.10/cwt; also up 15 cents/cwt for medium/short grain to an average of $17.75/cwt.
