Rice production may increase by up to 10 pc
New Delhi (PTI): Rice production is likely to rise by 5-10 per cent in 2008-09 season as farmers will be induced to increase the area under crop due to high domestic prices and possibility of diversion of some area from sugarcane, exporters said.

"Production of rice, including basmati and non-basmati, is expected to increase by 5-10 per cent," All India Rice Exporters' Association President Vijay Setia told PTI.

According to government's third advance estimate, rice production is projected at 95.68 million tons compared to 93.35 million tons in the previous year.

Setia attributed the high price of rice in the domestic market and anticipation that there may be a shift of area from sugarcane as factors for likely increase in production.

The retail price of rice stood between Rs 12-22 a kg at major centres of the country, according to government data. Sugar industry is facing a glut from 2006-07 season, which has led to huge arrears to sugarcane farmers.

Meanwhile, the government has banned export of non- basmati rice to boost the domestic supply and thus control inflation. It has imposed an export duty of 200 dollar per tonne for overseas sale of basmati rice, besides fixing the minimum export price of 1,000 dollars per tonne.
