Packaged rice supply returning to normal
Suppliers of packaged rice, along with rice millers, department store executives and Thai government officials agreed Thursday that supplies of packaged rice in local retail markets, especially shopping malls, will be ample and return to normal beginning from early May, a senior Ministry of Commerce official said.

Internal Trade Department (ITD) director-general Yanyong Puangraj said the agreement was made following his conferring earlier in the day with senior executives of four department stores, along with representatives of the Rice Packers and the Rice Millers Associations.

The assembled rice sector specialists affirmed that the sale of packaged rice at department stores would meet the needs of consumers within the coming week, Mr Yanyong said.

The agreement was reached after operators of shopping malls had agreed to pay rice traders more promptly, within 30 days, compared to the 45-60 day payment schedule they earlier practised, he said.

Thai Rice Packers Association chairman Somrerk Tangvirultham said a total of 2.8 million packages of rice were sent to department stores this month compared to only 1.9 million packages in March, or an increase of 47.4 per cent.

The shortage of packaged rice was seen after consumers started buying rice from shopping malls because it was about Bt30 cheaper per package than in grocery stores, Mr Somrerk said. Consumers also hoarded rice due to concern regarding rice shortages in the country as exporters preferred to ship rice to overseas for better prices.

The ITD has formally requested the association and major retail outlets to regularly report the status of their rice supplies beginning next week to ensure they have sufficient supplies on hand.

It also instructed all rice exporters to keep rice in stock in an amount of no less than 500 tonnes to prevent a rice price slump or a price-cut competition.

The move was made to ensure that exporters buy rice from farmers for their reserves and that the rice supply is sufficient for local consumption, Mr Yanyong said.
