Brazil Halts Rice Exports to Boost Domestic Supply
Brazil has temporarily stopped rice exports in order to preserve domestic supply in the face of rising worldwide prices for food and grain. This follows Wednesday's U.S. run on rice at Wal Mart and Sam's Club stores across the country, as rice futures hit a record high.

“We are limiting the sale of Jasmine, Basmati and Long Grain White Rices to four bags per member visit,” the company said in a statement Wednesday. “This is effective immediately in all of our U.S. clubs, where quantity restrictions are allowed by law.”

Brazil’s Minister of Agriculture, Reinhold Stephanes, said in a statement that the country grows more rice than it consumes and has a sufficient reserve. This reserve, Stephanes said, is enough to safeguard the country’s supply, but international sales will still be halted to ensure there is enough rice to last for six to eight months.

Brazil is following suit after several countries in Asia halted rice exports in order to preserve supplies. This has caused an imbalance in the world markets for grain, Stephanes said in the statement.

"We will follow the movement of the principal world producers," he said. "With the favorable price, it's possible that there will be an increase in production and that the supply situation will be resolved next year."

Requests made by countries in Africa and Latin America for 500,000 tons of Brazilian rice will not be met, Stephanes said. View Archives
