Taiwan Prices of rice will be stable, COA assures
TAIPEI, Taiwan -- A Council of Agriculture (COA) official assured yesterday that rice prices will be stable later this year due to more rice crops being cultivated and more imports from abroad.

You Sheng-feng, deputy director of the council's Agriculture and Food Agency, gave the assurance amid recent price hikes in many agricultural products, including rice, wheat, vegetables and fruits.

According to Yu, the prices of different varieties of rice have increased by 5 percent to 10 percent in February compared to the same month last year, due to decreased supply caused by typhoons in the second half of last year.

"To balance the prices of rice, the COA has been releasing 38,000 metric tons of stored rice onto the market and encouraging more farmers to cultivate rice," Yu said.

The area of paddy fields used for this year's first stage crop will reach 157,590 hectares, an increase of 2,129 hectares compared to the same period last year, according to Yu.

Council statistics also showed that the production of the country's two stages of rice crops reached 1.09 million metric tons last year, while this year's first stage of rice crops is expected to reach 800,000 metric tons.

In addition, Taiwan will import 144,720 metric tons of rice from abroad this year in accordance with World Trade Organization practices, Yu said, adding that all these measures will help stabilize the prices of rice.

"Compared to the surging prices of flour, the prices of rice are relatively stable and cheap, and it may become a substitute for flour," Yu stressed.
