US corn supply down, winter wheat sowing up 4%
WASHINGTON: U.S. farmers planted 46.610 million acres of winter wheat for harvest this year, enough land for a crop of 1.6 billion bushels, but the record corn crop of 2007 will be nearly exhausted by the time the new crop is harvested, the government said on Friday. The Agriculture Department report on winter wheat seedings was the first gauge of an expected shift to wheat and soybeans this year after last year's stampede to corn.

Winter wheat sowings were up 4 percent, or 1.6 million acres, from the year-ago tally but 2 million acres less than expected. Most of the shortfall was in hard red winter wheat territory. U.S. corn production was a record 13.074 billion bushels last year, USDA said, down slightly from its previous estimate of 3.168 billion bushels but livestock feeders are using more corn than expected despite sky-high prices.

As a result, 1.438 billion bushels will remain in storage when the new-crop harvest begins in late summer, down 353 million bushels, or 20 percent, from the December forecast. Corn consumption of 12.955 billion bushels would nearly match the 2007 crop. Due to strong cash and futures prices, USDA again raised its forecast of record-high farm-gate prices for corn, wheat and soybeans this marketing year.

Soybeans were forecast for a season-average $10.40 a bushel, corn for $4.00 a bushel and wheat $6.65 a bushel. Based on recent crops, winter wheat plantings of 46.610 million acres suggest harvest area of 37.35 million acres and a crop of 1.6 billion bushels, using the five-year average yield of 43.7 bushels an acre. The winter wheat plantings also suggest an all wheat total of 64.3 million acres.
