Rice Imports from Burma Resume in Bangladesh
Bangladesh resumed importing rice from Burma in the second week of November after a year and a half hiatus, in an effort to bring down the soaring prices of staples on the domestic market, reports a local official. A local customs officer from Teknaf said that 7,400 kilograms of rice in 148 sacks from Burma were released on the first day the trade resumed on 12 November, through the Teknaf border point.

Many rice cargo boats from Burma, mostly from Arakan State, are now harboring at the Teknaf port to export their Burmese rice to Bangladesh.

Bangladesh border sources said the exporting of rice from Burma is legal as the Burmese government has also permitted the export of rice to Bangladesh.

However, there is no solid information regarding whether the Burmese military government is permitting merchants to export rice to Bangladesh.

Previously, rice from Burma was smuggled to Bangladesh as prices there were double the prices on Burmese markets, and merchants on both sides brought the rice to sell in Bangladesh in order to increase their profits.

In Burma, the paddy harvest has begun and many farmers are wanting to sell their product at the higher prices in Bangladesh. Bangladeshi importers have also shown interest in importing rice, as the government has made rice imports duty free, said one official.

The Bangladesh caretaker government has lifted import duties on nine essential commodities from neighboring countries, including rice, wheat, pulses, oil, and milk, in the wake of unprecedented price increases that have been blamed on short supply as well as market manipulation.

Reports also indicate that recent restrictions on rice imports from India contributed to some extent to the inflation. Local importers in Bangladesh said huge quantities of rice would be imported from the rice-surplus in Burma.
