Cross-country: Chinese hybrid rice expertise sought
KUCHING: Sarawak is looking to China to help improve its rice production. The state is producing between 2.5 tonnes and three tonnes of padi per hectare while China's Hunan province produces over 10 tonnes per hectare.

The state government, through the Agriculture Department, has signed a memorandum of collaboration with China's Aviva Brothers Group Limited.

Aviva Group is credited with developing hybrid padi production technology, in use in India, Vietnam, the Philippines, Bangladesh and the United States.

In experimental plots, Aviva was able to produce 17 tonnes of padi from one hectare.

Speaking in his capacity of minister of modernisation of agriculture yesterday, Deputy Chief Minister Tan Sri Dr George Chan said the Chinese company would provide the technical know-how and investment capital.

"We have hundreds of local varieties that can be crossed to become hybrid padi.

"Aviva has expressed its intention to invest and extend its hybrid padi technology to Sarawak.

"The use of hybrid padi will increase yields by 20 per cent compared with the conventional commercial padi variety."

He said the Agriculture Department's research centre at Paya Paloh in Kota Samarahan would conduct research and development on crossing the local varieties.

"I expect the centre to produce the local hybrid padi in three to five years," he said, adding that his ministry was looking at the Stumbin-Batang Lupar area in Sri Aman Division for the planting of the hybrid padi.

Dr Chan recently led a study tour to Hunan province where they were briefed on padi production by Professor Yuan Long Ping, 78, known in China as the "Father of Hybrid Padi".

"Professor Yuan is very passionate about rice research and aspires to produce the ultimate hybrid to feed the world. He has received many awards for his work and I have invited him to visit Sarawak."
