Prices Steady; Strong Demand Supports Thai Offers
MANILA (Dow Jones)--Asian physical rice export prices were unchanged Friday amid strong demand in Thailand, which is the only available supplier of the grain in the region. "We have many inquiries right now. Demand is being diverted from India to Thailand," one Bangkok-based exporter said.

Buying interest continues to surge in Thailand following India's decision last week to ban the export of non-basmati rice, exporters said.

Some exporters, in fact, have ceased making offers as they have already enough export commitments for the rest of the year, a second exporter said.

"We're already committed for the rest of the year. We may no longer be able to accommodate further demand so we prefer not to quote. But we're going to deal with inquiries on a case-to-case basis," the second exporter said.

Exporters added that prices will likely continue on their upward trend as buyers are expected to seek supply from Thailand.

Thai 100% grade B was offered steady Friday at $339-$344/ton, FOB Bangkok, 5% broken at $332-$338/ton, and parboiled 100% sortexed was at $346-$347/ton.

In Vietnam, indicative prices were unchanged Friday, even as the government continues to ban new export contracts.

Despite the ban, many suppliers are busy loading rice for shipment abroad.

Pending shipments are bound mostly for the Philippines and Indonesia, one exporter said.

The indicative price for Vietnam's 5% broken was unchanged Friday at $325/ton, FOB, Ho Chi Minh City, while that of 5% broken was $300/ton,FOB.
