Vietnam cuts rice export target to raise food reserves
Traders said rice shipments as of early last week totalled 3.85 million tons, leaving about half a million tons to be shipped between now and December under the new rice export quota.

Indicative export prices for 5-percent broken rice were unchanged at $320 a ton, free-on-board. The 25-percent broken grade was offered at $300 a ton, FOB, also unchanged from a week ago.

Vietnam, the world's second-largest exporter of rice, has seen its crop fields and homes flooded since Oct. 3 when Typhoon Lekima struck, triggering some of the worst floods in decades in the north-central provinces.

This week, torrential rains caused flooding in the four central provinces of Quang Binh, Quang Tri, Thua Thien Hue and Quang Ngai.

Floods from the typhoon submerged nearly 31,000 hectares (76,600 acres) of rice. Relief workers took rice from state reserves to give to flood victims.

The government has said Vietnam's paddy output this year was likely to drop 0.7 percent to 35.6 million tons because of adverse weather and farmers converting some of their fields to raise fish and other crops.

This week, five ships were loading 65,900 tons of mainly 25 percent broken rice for the Philippines and Cuba while 10 others have finished loading 91,700 tonnes for Africa, Malaysia, Indonesia and the Philippines.
