Rice exporters oppose blanket ban on non-basmati rice
"A number of premium varieties rice grown in the country are not needed for the PDS. Any government of the day will be sensitive to the PDS requirements. But, I am not sure how a blanket ban on all non-basmati rice helps," All India Rice Exporters Association President Vijay Setia said in a statement.

The Director General of Foreign Trade issued the notification on October 15 banning export of non-basmati rice effective from October 9. It, however, did not specify what would happen to the shipments for which contracts have been already signed or Letter of Credit received.

Indian rice trades in a very wide range between 280 dollar per tonne to 1300 dollar a tonne in global markets, he added.

He said it was important for non-PDS consumers to recognise that they have to pay a higher prices for the food they consume.

"Banning rice varieties that cost well above the PDS quality rice does not help the country," the AIREA president said.

Export is a small way in which the farmers supplement their marginal income that they get from domestic market, he noted.

"Is not a ban on agri-exports a mechanism that forces a farmer to subsidise the middle class," Setia questioned.

The non-basmati export from India stood at 37.04 lakh tonnes valued at Rs 4,258 crores in 2006-07 against 29.21 lakh tonnes amounting to Rs 3,178 crores in the previous year.
