Thai,Vietnam Prices Mostly Steady On Strong Demand
BANGKOK (Dow Jones)
BANGKOK (Dow Jones)--Asian rice export prices were mostly steady Wednesday from the previous Friday, with Thai rice prices steady to higher as strong demand offset the expected release of government rice stocks, exporters said.

"Demand for Thai rice is healthy now as large buyers are seeking to buy rice from Thailand due to tight supply availability in Vietnam," a Bangkok-based exporter said.

Thailand has just been awarded fresh contracts to supply 50,000 tons of lower grades of white rice to Indonesia for delivery between September and October, exporters said.

Iran, a major buyer, is expected to import more than 200,000 tons of Thai rice for the rest of the year to secure its national rice stocks, they said.

Iran has already imported around 600,000 tons of rice in the first half of this year under government-to-government deals.

According to market participants, the negative impact of government stock release on domestic prices are likely to be offset by strong import demand from Asia and Middle-East countries.

Thai 100% grade B rice was offered mostly steady Wednesday at $332 a metric ton, FOB Bangkok, while 5% broken was offered $2 higher at around $324/ton.

Thai parboiled 100% sortexed was offered steady at $336/ton.

As for exports, Thailand's rice exports from Jan. 1 to Sept. 12 rose by 11.3% on year to 5.61 million metric tons, the Commerce Ministry's Department of Foreign Trade said Wednesday.

Thailand 's rice exports from Sept. 1-12 totaled 290,995 tons, up 14.8% on year.

Vietnam has also exported large amounts of rice, especially over the past few months, exporters said.

During the week, five vessels at Saigon port were waiting to be loaded with 56,450 tons of rice for export to Africa and the Philippines.

The indicative price for Vietnam's 5% broken rice was offered steady Wednesday at $320/ton, FOB Ho Chi Minh City, 25% broken at $300/ton.

In Vietnam, prices remained steady amid limited domestic supply, exporters said.
