Indonesia raises rice import duties
Jakarta (ANTARA News) - The Indonesian government has raised its rice import duty from Rp450 per kg to Rp550 per kg which will be effective after state-owned logistics agency (Perum Bulog) has realized all of its 2007 planned rice imports of 1.5 million tons.

"We adopt this policy in order to ensure that prices at home would not drop drastically or increase sharply. This policy is basically for price stabilization," Trade Minister Marie Pangestu said.

The minister said that the Rp100 increase was not expected to drag down rice prices at farmer level, neither would it do harm to Bulog.

The government also hoped that Bulog would use two instruments, namely market operation and import of rice in order to stabilize prices and increase stocks at home.

She said that the government allowed Bulog to decide itself in the procurement of stocks, whether importing rice or purchasing it from farmers at home.

"If Bulog thinks it is not enough to purchase rice from farmers, it could apply for a permit to import rice. We would check the movements of prices, and if necessary we would allow Bulog to import the commodity," she said.

The minister said that at present Bulog still had an import quota of 300 thousand tons of rice. "It should finish the quota first before asking for another permit to import more rice," the minister added.(*)
