DA fears losing 400,000 MT of rice to dry spell
This year’s rice production may face a shortfall of 200,000 to 400,000 metric tons due to the dry spell experienced in Metro Manila and western part of Luzon, which is expected to continue until this month, Agriculture Secretary Arthur Yap said during Tuesday’s Legislative-Executive Development Advisory Council meeting in Malacañang.

“We are looking at about 200,000 to 400,000 metric tons possible hit on our 2007 production," he said, adding that he has to find a “quick turnaround program" in the Visayas and Mindanao to make up for the shortfall.

He said the rice supply, which is still “normal," and “stable" will last for 60-90 days.

Yap said the stability in rice supply is due to the expansion in palay production in the first and second quarters of this year and the National Food Authority (NFA) domestic and international procurement.

Yap said President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo has ordered increased spending on infrastructure to help farmers whose earnings would be affected by the dry spell.

The DA, according to Yap, asked the budget department to advance P500 million from foreign assisted project funds for irrigation of farmlands in Ilocos, Cagayan Valley, Central Luzon and the Cordillera Administrative Regions that were hit hardest by the dry spell
