Japan looks at rice for biofuels production
TOKYO, JAPAN ¾ According to the International Grains Council (IGC) bulletin, the University of Tokyo launched a project on May 30 to commercialize the production of biofuel from rice, using the whole plant.

Industry and academic groups as well as government and non-profit organizations will work together to demonstrate its commercial viability as a vehicle fuel. Professor Shigenori Morita, project leader, stated that rice was more suitable to be used in Japan than sugarcane or maize.

With increasing amounts of abandoned farmland, rice could be grown for biofuel without affecting food production. The project is intended to improve land conservation, promote rural areas and improve Japan’s energy self-sufficiency ratio.

IGC also noted that the FY2006 Annual Report on Food, Agriculture andRural Areas, adopted by the government of Japan on May 25, stated that Japan could be affected by tight global food supplies in the medium and long terms, and warned of the risks of relying on imports for most of the country’s food supply.

The report highlighted the importance of increasing Japan’s food self-sufficiency ratio. Positive effects of doing this included the health benefits of a "Japanese style diet", support for local agriculture, reduction of greenhouse gas emissions due to shorter transport distances, and ensuring stable supplies in emergencies.
