Global Rice Trade
Global rice trade for calendar year 2008 is projected at a record 29.6 million tons (milled basis), up 200,000 tons from last month’s forecast and up fractionally from a year earlier. There were three export revisions this month for 2008. First, the U.S. export forecast was raised 400,000 tons to 3.1 million tons based on a larger U.S. production forecast and expectations of more competitive U.S. prices. This upward revision was offset by a 100,000-ton reduction in Australia’s export forecast to 50,000 tons, the smallest since 1962. In addition, Vietnam’s exports were lowered 100,000 tons to 4.7 million based on tighter supplies.

The only country specific import revision for 2008 was a 25,000-ton increase in Australia’s imports to a record 150,000 tons, based on much tighter supplies. On a year-to-year basis, in 2008, larger shipments from Thailand, Uruguay, Cambodia, China, Egypt, and Pakistan are projected to offset smaller shipments from the United States, India, and Guyana. Among major importers in 2008, increased purchases by Iraq, Brazil, China, the Philippines, Mexico, and the United States are projected to more than offset smaller imports by Indonesia, Iran, Nigeria, Bangladesh, Malaysia, Russia, and Turkey.

Global trade in 2007 is forecast at 29.4 million tons, down 1 percent from last month’s forecast, but 2 percent larger than a year earlier and the second highest on record. There were two revisions on the export side. First, Vietnam’s exports were lowered 300,000 tons to 4.7 million based on smaller supplies and pace-to-date. And second, Australia’s 2007 export forecast was raised 50,000 tons to 150,000 based on a larger 2006/07 production estimate and shipment pace. The only 2007 import revision was a 150,000-ton increase in Vietnam’s imports to 450,000 tons, the highest since 1986. The higher import forecast for Vietnam was based on shipment pace.
