Vietnam to increase the quality for Export Rice
In its rice export strategy, the Vietnamese Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD) has set forth plans to improve the quality of rice exports rather than the quantity of shipped rice in a bid to increase revenues.

The plan also looks into ways to ensure national food security in accordance with predetermined rice cultivation acreages and measures to build the Vietnamese rice brand in global markets.

Backing up the plan, the MARD's Cultivation Department has developed and carried out a programme on high-quality rice varieties for export. It has been running in the Mekong delta that produces close to 90 per cent of the country's entire volume of rice exports.

From the 2006-07 winter-spring crop, the Mekong delta region began a pilot programme to produce 1 million tonnes of high-quality rice for exports, that will meet required standards of productivity, quality and food safety.

Irrigation networks development and encouragement for farmers to change their production habits by applying modern techniques are also heavily themed in the initiative.

Vietnam is now the second largest rice exporter in the world after Thailand and with rice quality on the up over recent years, Vietnamese farmers now enjoy similar prices for their crops to farmers from the Southeast Asian Kingdom.

The government has also been flexible in managing rice exports in accordance with domestic production and fluctuations on the world markets.

According to the General Statistics Office, Vietnam in the first half of 2007 exported 2.3 million tones of rice and earned over US$731 million, a drop of 9 per cent in volume and 5.6 per cent in turnover in comparison to the previous year.
