Indian firm eying rice husk for energy
Representatives from an Indian Company this week met with Minister of Tourism, Industry and Commerce Manniram Prashad to explore the possibilities of using rice husks to generate energy.

A Government Information Agency (GINA) release said Prashad met with Rabindra Gandhi, a partner with United Engineering (Eastern) Cor-poration at his office to discuss the venture. The minister said the meeting was part of a preliminary visit and more discussions will be held with other stakeholders in the industry. He also pointed out that rice husk is readily available since the rice industry does not utilize this waste and it sometimes causes environmental problems in some communities as millers are known to burn large quantities at a time.

Gandhi said Guyana has readily available agro-waste and as such generating energy from it will provide another venue to garner revenue.

Prashad said that this venture is an example of one of the linkages being created to encourage businessmen from other countries, with the machinery and resources, to invest in Guyana and aid its development. Earlier this year he attended a conference in New Delhi where he encouraged the businesses to invest in Guyana as the country has "a favourable investment climate." Discussions at the conference focused on areas including pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, transportation, ICT, agribusiness, energy, media and entertainment, tourism and hospitality and healthcare.

GINA said government is also negotiating with the Indian government to establish a local craft school. "With the high quality of wood in Guyana, Indian expertise will only add to the development of a competitive market" for the country, the release said. The school will be managed by Indian craftsmen/teachers.

United Engineering is a leading company in India which manufactures edible oil, processing plants, motorcycles and lathes, GINA reported. It manufactures renewable energy systems using biogas and biomass and exports to 33 countries worldwide. The company also designs and supplies projects for waste water treatment and water purification.
