New export taxes on Egyptian rice
MediumGrainRice – Special report
Export taxes system is already running for cargo rice. Exported quantities of cargo rice for CY 2006 / 2007 are subject of export taxes in amount of $ 65.- per mt. Amount payable directly to the government.

For 2007 / 2008 there are announced new export taxes on white rice. Amount per mt is subject to negotiations between the government and exporters. While government is requesting $ 50.- per mt, rice exporters are suggesting $ 25.-. This is leading us to the point that export taxes are not subject of “to be or not to be”.

As per rice exporters opinion, $ 25.- / mt is amount which can be “consume” by the buyers and will not effect the rice exports coming season.

Just as indication, rice exports already reached 1 MIO mt, and are at limited exportable quantity declared by the government in the beginning of the crop year. Does this means that we will see another rice export ban from Egypt? Likely not, as domestic market was covered by approximately 100`000 mt imported from India.

Government intention is to bring the value of Egyptian rice at level of US Calrose or Italian medium grain rice. One thing is sure, this will make medium grain rice market firm.
