India has Slight decline in prices of rice as
Prices of rice at the wholesale level declined slightly and the prices of edible oil increased further while the prices of other essential commodities remained unchanged in the city markets over the past week.

Traders said prices of rice declined slightly in the markets mainly due to increase in supply in the peak harvesting season of the same and for allowing the truck drivers to carry more than five tonnes at a time.

Recently, the government has again allowed carrying of more than five tonnes of goods in a truck at a time. As a result, the cost of carrying declined to some extent, traders said. Talking to the FE, general secretary of the Badamtoli and Babu Bazar Rice Traders Association Nizam Uddin said prices of rice declined by Tk 50-Tk 60 per maund over the last week.

During the last week at the wholesale level, Indian variety of Swarna and Paari were selling at Tk 750-Tk 780 per maund compared with their previous rates at Tk 800-Tk 830 per maund, and the Lata variety of rice was selling at Tk 850-Tk 860 per maund compared with its previous rates at Tk 900-Tk 910 per maund.

IRRI variety of rice was selling at Tk 700-Tk 710 per maund compared with its previous rates at Tk 760-Tk 780 per maund, Nazirshail from Savar at Tk 850-Tk 900 per maund compared with its previous rates at Tk 900-Tk 950 per maund, Nazirshail from North Bengal at Tk 920-Tk 930 per maund compared with its previous rates at Tk 980 per maund.

Prices of Minicate variety of rice remained more or less unchanged at Tk 1010-1020 per maund at wholesale level, traders said.

But at the retail level, prices of fine varieties of rice remained unchanged at Tk 30-Tk 32 per kg and the coarse varieties of rice at Tk 22-Tk 24 per kg.

During the last week at the wholesale level soybean oil was selling at Tk 2600 per maund compared with its previous rate at Tk 2500 per maund, super palm oil at Tk 2550-2570 per maund compared with its previous rates at Tk 2400-Tk 2420 per maund and the palm oil at Tk 2550 per maund compared with its previous rates at Tk 2350-Tk 2360 per maund.

At the retail level, the prices of edible oil remained at their previous high at Tk 365-Tk 375 per five-litre container of different brands. Traders said potato was selling at Tk 20 per kg, unchanged from the previous week.

During the last week at the wholesale level sugar was selling at Tk 1000 per maund, unchanged from the previous week. At the retail level the traders said sugar was selling at Tk 30 per kg, unchanged from the previous week. The market operators said the prices of local variety of onion remained unchanged at Tk 18-Tk 20 per kg over the past week.

During the last week in the vegetable markets brinjal and bitter gourd prices remained unchanged at Tk 20-Tk 24 per kg. Prices of okra, snake gourd and ridge remained unchanged at Tk 20 per kg during the last week.

Prices of green chilli remained unchanged at Tk 32-Tk 36 per kg. Traders said garlic was selling at Tk40-Tk 60 per kg, unchanged from the previous week.

Prices of the fine variety of lentil remained unchanged at Tk 70-Tk 72 per kg and its Turkish variety at Tk 64-Tk66 per kg. Prices of 'moong' pulse remained unchanged at Tk 70-Tk 74 per kg during the last week.

During the last week ginger was selling at Tk 35-Tk40 per kg, unchanged from the previous week. During the last week beef was selling at Tk 180 per kg, unchanged from the previous week. In the last week, prices of poultry birds remained unchanged at Tk 90-Tk100 per kg and eggs at Tk 52 per dozen.

Mutton was selling at Tk 220-Tk 230 per kg, unchanged from the previous week. During the last week a medium-size hilsa fish was selling at Tk 250-Tk 350, unchanged from the previous week.

During the last week at the retail level packaged coarse flour was selling at Tk 27-Tk28 per kg, unchanged from the previous week in the city markets. Traders said prices of refined salt remained unchanged at Tk 18 per kg.
