DJ Asian Rice: Prices Steady As Mkt Waits For New Thai Contracts
MANILA (Dow Jones)
MANILA (Dow Jones)--Asian physical rice export prices were unchanged Friday as the market waited for Thailand to sign fresh contracts, exporters said.

Iran and Iraq are expected to close new rice contracts with Thai suppliers in the weeks ahead, exporters said.

Thai Commerce Minister Krirkkrai Jirapaet told a rice convention Friday that Thai suppliers are expected to sell 150,000 metric tons of rice to Iraq in the next two to three months.

Jirapaet said 32,000 tons will be shipped to Iraq this month, while the rest will be shipped over the next few months.

Iranian traders are also in negotiations to buy 300,000 tons of rice from Thai traders.

Exporters said the fresh demand in the market could further boost Thai export prices even though current prices are already at high levels.

"Buyers don't have much choice at this point...Vietnam prices are also high," one exporter said.

The tight export supply in Vietnam, Thailand's main competitor in the rice export trade, could send many buyers back to the Thai market, the exporter added.

Meanwhile, rice imports by Indonesia, a major buyer of rice in Asia, could rise to 2.2 million tons this year from 600,000 tons last year, an Indonesian government official said.

"Indonesia's rice imports will likely rise this year as production may fall short of demand because of El Nino weather conditions hurting the rice crop," said Ardiansyah Tarman, director-general of Indonesia's domestic trade department.

Thai 100% grade B was offered unchanged at $325-$327/ton, FOB, Bangkok; 5% broken was offered steady at $314-$316/ton; parboiled 100% sortexed was offered flat at $320-$324/ton.

In Vietnam, prices were unchanged at high levels on a strong domestic market, exporters said.

Despite the arrival of fresh supply in the market, with farmers having just completed harvesting a major crop, local prices have remained at high levels, they said.

The bulk of fresh rice supply has already been committed for export, they added.

Vietnam's 5% broken was offered steady Friday at $300/ton, FOB, Ho Chi Minh City; 10% broken was offered flat at $295/ton; 25% broken was offered unchanged at $285/ton.

In other news, Thailand's rice exports in 2007 may rise to 9 million tons from 7.5 million tons last year, an industry executive said Friday.

"Thailand's rice exports are set to rise due to higher overseas demand as global rice output is expected to fall this year," Chookiat Ophasawongse, president of the Rice Exporters' Association of Thailand, said on the sidelines of a rice conference in Bangkok.

Rising consumption is likely to push global rice demand higher in 2007 to 418 million tons versus 414 million tons last year, he added.
