Thai rice exports to reach 8.5 million tons, ministry says
Bangkok - Thailand's rice exports were expected to hit 8.5 million tons this year, a 15-per-cent increase over last year, the deputy commerce minister said Tuesday. Rice exports in the first four months of this year hit 2.8 million tons, encouraging the government to believe the country could reach the 2007 target of 8.5 million tons, Oranuj Osathananda told the state-run Thai News Agency.

Oranuj said Thailand's current political instability was unlikely to affect exports, the key engine for economic growth this year, although imports were expected to decline on falling domestic demand and a slowdown in investment.

Thailand experienced a military coup on September 19, which installed an interim government tasked with drafting a new constitution and holding a general election by the end of 2007.

The kingdom has set a goal of increasing exports by 12.5 per cent this year. Exports in the first quarter of 2007 reached 34 billion dollars, up 18 per cent from the same period of 2006.

Imports during the first three months reached 30.5 billion dollars, up 2 per cent, leaving the kingdom with a trade surplus of 3.5 billion dollars compared with a 492-million-dollar deficit during the same period of 2006.
