Russia bans rice deliveries from India
Russia has banned rice, peanut and sesame exports from India. The decision that was made in March takes effect today, May 1, 2007. Over the given time-limits, India has failed to prevent deliveries of hazardous product to the country, explained representatives of Rosselkhoznadzor, which is the animal and plant health watchdog in Russia.
The attempts to deliver to Russia hazardous rice, peanut and sesame from India have been continuously recorded, Rosselkhoznadzor said. In January for instance, the pests were spotted in a peanut consignment of 54 tons. In March, they were found in the 125-ton consignment of rice. In February, there was an attempt to deliver moldy sesame, which also contained the B1 aflatoxin and metallomagnetic substances.

Rosselkhoznadzor urged India to provide with each consignment the data on pesticides used to cultivate and store the rice exported to Russia, specifying the amount and date of the last treatment.

In 2006, Rosselkhoznadzor discovered over 2,000 tons of the poor-quality rice; the bulk of it came from India, Pakistan, Thailand and Egypt.
