Thai Export prices declined slightly
Market Tone

Marketing resumed after the long official holiday last week. Export prices softened and domestic supplies increased. The Government conducted bidding for 33,098 tons of 5 percent grade white rice from 2005/06 intervention stocks on the Agricultural Futures Exchange of Thailand (AFET) last week. The plan is to release a total of 150,000 ton of 2005/06 intervention stocks on AFET within three months. The goal is to promote trading activities in AFET as an optional risk management tool for domestic rice market. According to the first bidding on April 20, 2007, there were 25 exporters and millers participating with average bidding basis prices of minus 1 baht/kg (from anticipated market prices in the next three months) due mainly to quality concerns. The best basis prices were offered at -0.33 to -0.55 baht/kg for delivery on June 1. Meanwhile, second crop harvest in the central plain is underway. However, some exporters offered higher export prices due to current exchange rate uncertainties. Some quotations are based on current strengthening Thai Baht of 34.5 baht/U.S. $1.00.
