Japan, China Sign Agreement To Lift Ban On Japanese Rice Imports
(RTTNews) - Ahead of a summit between the two Asian powers, Japan and China signed an agreement Wednesday lifting Beijing's four-year ban on Japanese rice, paving the way for Tokyo to resume rice exports to China within the next few months, Japanese agricultural officials said.

Japanese Agriculture Minister Toshikatsu Matsuoka and Li Changjiang, a top Chinese food-inspection official, signed the agreement hours ahead of a meeting between Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and his Chinese counterpart, Premier Wen Jiabao that is likely enhance bilateral ties.

Wen is scheduled to arrive later Wednesday in Tokyo on a three-day tour to become the first Chinese premier to visit Japan in seven years.

China banned rice imports from Japan in 2003 after changing its quarantine standards, saying insects were found in a shipment. Earlier efforts to resume the trade had been unsuccessful amid tense relations between the two countries.

China is the world's largest rice consumer but is self-sufficient. Japan is looking to tap a market among wealthy Chinese consumers for high-end rice.
