Japan to develop rice resistant to heat to cope with global warming
(Kyodo) _ The Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries Ministry has compiled its global warming forecast showing that Japan will see its rice output fall significantly and may lose most of its beech forests if levels of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere double to push up the mercury, ministry officials said Saturday.

The farm ministry will work on countermeasures, such as developing new rice breeds resistant to heat or lack of water, which will be discussed April 25 when it convenes a meeting of its global warming headquarters for release possibly in July, the officials said.

According to the ministry forecast, if CO2 levels in the air become twice as dense as now, some prefectures, mostly those in central and western Japan, will lose a maximum 40 percent of their rice yields. But some areas in northern Japan will see their rice yields grow.

About 90 percent of areas in northern and central Japan, which are suitable for beech forests, will no longer be so.

Fruit production is another farm sector that will be significantly affected by global warming, according to the forecast.

The areas which will be newly suitable for growing fruit trees will be located north of the current production centers, and the quality of produce in the current growing areas will deteriorate, for instance with the color of apples becoming lighter, it shows.

To cope with damage to fruits and vegetables caused by higher temperatures, the ministry will research new cultivation methods that can better respond to a change in temperatures, the officials said.

Some researchers say the global CO2 emission volume at the end of this century will be between 1.3 times and 3.3 times the current level, and this will boost the average global temperature by a maximum 6.4 C.
