China's rice export and processing
In face of a saturated domestic rice market, Chinese rice producers have no other choice but to expand their exports. But sharp growth of Chinese rice exports will be difficult due to the gradual decline in global rice consumption. "China's per capita rice consumption has dropped to 97.5 kilograms from 107.5 kilograms over the past five years as people consume more meat, vegetable, fruit, as well as bean products," president of Dalian Northern Cereal Exchange, Zheng Chunfeng, told Interfax.

"Declining rice consumption is a global trend that is also affecting Japan, South Korea and Taiwan," Zheng said.

Though sharp growth is difficult, modest growth for the rice exports could be achievable through improving quality and expanding rice-processing businesses, according to experts and rice firms. "Chinese rice producers have long been focused on output volume rather than the taste of the rice they produce," senior rice researcher with China Science Academia Northeast Geography and Agriculture Research Institute, Liang Zhengwei, said.

"Chinese agricultural products have the advantage of lower prices given its cheap labor cost. If the taste of Chinese rice is accepted by Japanese customers, China could expand its rice exports, although Japan has the ability to self-supply 95 percent of its rice needs," said Liang, who lived in Japan for 13 years.
