Paddy cultivation to be boosted with technology and new varieties
Pelvehera CIC Farm has implemented a plan to cultivate old varieties of paddy through new technology to boost paddy cultivation and to export rice. The Manager of the farm Asanga Dematawa said the first consignment of 20 metric tons of Basmathi rice was exported to Germany recently. The consignment of rice was shipped in 2 kilo bags for convenience of marketing. At present several other traditional varieties of rice are being milled for export. The farm has engaged 3000 farmers from Dambulla area to cultivate paddy under the programme. The farm manager said the farmers who cultivate old varieties of paddy under the programme can reap a bumper harvest and find remunerative market for their produce through the farm.

“It is said that Sri Lanka has a surplus of paddy. However the Sri Lankan farmers failed produce export quality rice. This is due to the use of law quality seed paddy. Cultivation of about two million acres of paddy needs four million bushels of seed paddy. However the private sector or the government is not able meet the demand. At present they supply only 600,000 bushels of seed paddy to the market. The shortage compels the farmers to use their own varieties of seed paddy We have improved new varieties of paddy to increase the yield and the quality of rice. The farmers, who cultivate paddy under the programme, do not have any problem about finding a market for their produce. Another consignment of rice will be sent to Australia and Dubai soon. We are in a position to meet the increasing demand for rice to the local market as well. The farm management has made arrangements to impart the new technique to any person who takes an interest in learning it for better results.
