Thai Export prices were offered higher
Market Tone

Export prices for most grades of rice were offered higher due to the strengthening of the Thai baht to 35.38 baht/US$, compared to the previous week’s average of 35.50 baht/US$. Despite this, Thai rice is relatively attractive to foreign buyers, such as Indonesia and Iran, who are aggressively sourcing rice for prompt shipments. The Thai Government is expected to conclude Government-to-Government deals of around 200,000 tons of 15% grade white rice with Indonesia at U.S. $309/MT for March – May delivery. The Thai Government is negotiating another Government-to-Government sale of around 380,000 tons of premium white rice with Iran. The Government will likely reach their target of one million tons in Government-to-Government sales this year, if these current deals are concluded. So far, the Government has delivered approximately 51,000 tons to Iran under the Government-to- Government sales of 200,000 tons of premium white rice last month for February – May delivery. However, the Thai Government is unlikely to participate in the Philippines’ tender tomorrow for 580,000 tons of white rice (550,000 tons for 15% grade white rice and 30,000 tons for 25% grade white rice), due to unattractive terms and conditions of the tender. The Philippine Government is asking for the tender to be D/A (Documents against Acceptance) rather than LC (Letter of Credit) guaranteed, which is considered overly risky by the Thai Government.
