AWB eyes record wheat crop
Disgraced exporter AWB yesterday stepped up its campaign to keep its grip on Australia's wheat crop, warning it alone was capable of handling what could be a record harvest next summer as farmers bounce back from drought.

Chairman Brendan Stewart told its annual meeting some forecasters were predicting a crop of up to 27 million tonnes was about to be planted, nearly three times this summer's drought-hit harvest.

"There is only one Australian company that would have the capacity to run a national pool for such a crop," Mr Stewart said. AWB also released its first price forecast for the coming season yesterday - a historically high $245 to $255 a tonne, increasing the prospect of a big planting in coming months if there are good opening rains.

But AWB also warned it was not doing anything to try to lock in the price through hedging because of the uncertainty surrounding the wheat marketing system.

AWB shareholders, who have seen their share price halve in the past year, got further bad news when it also cautioned its net profit for the year to September 30 was likely to plunge 30 to 40 per cent to as little as $35 million.
