Pakistan Rice exports fall by 5pc
KARACHI: A decline of 4.99 per cent has been recorded in the export of rice during January 2007 compared to December 2006.

In January, rice exports stood at $140.74 million in terms of value and 247,987 tonnes in terms of quantity compared to exports worth $148.96 million and 272,314 tonnes of different varieties in December 2006.

However, the export of prime quality rice ń Basmati - recorded an upward trend, both in terms of value and quantity.

According to latest figures released by the Federal Bureau of Statistics (FBS), the exporters fetched around $50.92 million by shipping 86,112 tonnes of Basmati rice in January 2007 compared to 72,501 tonnes of Basmati rice worth $42.86 million exported in December 2006.

During January, the export of other rice varieties like Irri-6 and Irri-9 was recorded at 161,875 tonnes worth $42.54 million against 199,813 tonnes worth $52.50 million in December 2006.

In recent days, the prices of rice have skyrocketed in the domestic as well as international markets amid growing demand in the wake of low production in major rice-producing countries this year, including India and Vietnam.

Some trade sources expect shortfall of 30 to 40 per cent in rice production in Pakistan this year, which has pushed prices up.

Last year, the total production of rice was 5.8 million tonnes, while this year the production has fallen due to untimely rains, floods and low yield. Last year, the country’s rice exports rose to a record $1.2 billion.
