Indonesia Govt sets late April as deadline to decide second-phase rice import
Solo, C Java (ANTARA News) - Trade Minister Marie Elka Pangestu said the government had set late April as the deadline for a decision to implement the second stage (500,000 tons) of a rice import program for this year.

The minister said the rice import plan was still under discussion but when the government had decided to conduct the import, the supplier would be either Thailand or Vietnam, two countries with which Indonesia already had rice trading agreements.

Mari made the remarks on the sidelines of the inauguration of three traditional markets here on Saturday.

"The State Logistics Agency (Bulog) is given until the end of April to decide the import," she said.

The government was considering to import 500,000 more tons of rice in addition to the 500,000 tons already being imported to beef up the national rice stock after rice prices in domestic markets began to soar.

With the aim of pushing down the rice prices, the government through Bulog launched rice market opertions and was planning optional import of another 500,000 tons in the second phase to increase Bulog`s stocks.

Director General for Internal Trade Ardiansyah Parman said on Monday the decision to carry out the option of importing another 500,000 tons of rice, in addition to the on-going importation of 500,000 tons, would depend on stocks procurement by Bulog during the coming March-April 2007 grand harvest.

"The decision to carry out the option will depend on the position of Bulog`s rice stocks. If procurement of rice at home in April is not able to guarantee the stocks` security, then the optional import will be carried out," he said.

Ardiansyah said that Vice President Yusuf Kalla had announced that the government would import one million tons of rice, consisting of 500,000 tons which would be carried out soon while the other 500,000 tons would be imported "if necessary."

"The aim of the rice imports is to increase Bulog`s rice stocks and to conduct rice market operations as well as to have enough rice in stock to distribute rice (at subsidized price) among the poor," he said.(*)
