Thai Export prices for high-quality rice remained unchanged.
Market Tone

Export prices were mixed. Prices of high-quality rice remained unchanged at high levels. Most exporters are fulfilling the outstanding shipments to Iran. Some exporters have reportedly received new enquiries from Iran premium white rice. However, Thai rice exporters are hesitant to conclude deals over their concerns of limited exportable supplies and exchange rate fluctuations. These enquiries from Iran are expected to result in Government-to-Government sales. Export and domestic prices of low-quality rice continued to increase following strong foreign demand, particularly from African and Asian countries. However, the trading volume has been low as exporters are concerned about tight domestic supplies and exchange rate fluctuations. Local millers and traders are holding speculative stocks in anticipation of strong Indonesian demand for low quality rice. Meanwhile, export and domestic prices of broken rice continued to surge as domestic feed mills continue to substitute feed corn with broken rice. In addition, new-crop supplies of Vietnamese white rice, which will come out within 2 to 3 weeks, is not expected to ease export prices of low quality white rice. Most supplies of Vietnamese white rice have been allocated to fulfill pending shipments. Exchange rate fluctuations remained a major concern for Thai rice exports. The Government has relaxed the capital control measures, raising expectations of Thai Baht appreciation. Currently, the exchange rate is at around 35.6 baht/U.S.$.
