Wheat harvest on track despite warm weather
NEW DELHI, FEB 4: India has said this year's wheat harvest would meet earlier forecasts of 74 million tonne despite a sudden rise in temperatures in key growing regions at the end of January, which could have knocked back output.

In need of a healthy crop following the first imports of the grain in six years during 2006, above normal temperatures last week stoked fears India's output might fall short of the target. "We took stock of the situation late last evening and found the rise in mercury was for a very short span of time," a senior food ministry official told Reuters. "Weather so far has been good for ... 74 million tonnes." Wheat output in India, the world's second-largest producer, stood at 69.4 million tonnes last year as warm weather in February helped pull production down from estimates of around 73-74 million tonnes.

That forced the government to order 5.5 million tonnes of expensive imports to shore up stocks and curb soaring prices. Officials are scheduled to announce crop output estimates in the next 10 days, and said the offer of incentives to plant more wheat—such as discounted input costs—had paid off. "There is no reason to worry about output this time as an additional 1.5 million hectares have been brought under wheat sowing," the official said. The expansion was concentrated in the states of Maharashtra, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh and Bihar.
