Indonesia Prolonged dryness is responsible for delayed planting and harvesting

The Indonesian Meteorology and Geophysics Agency’s (BMG) forecast that in 2006/07 Indonesia would experience a light El Nino phenomenon leading to a prolonged dry season had been proven to be correct. On the island of Java, the rainy season, which normally starts in October, has yet to fully arrive. Abnormal weather has led to delayed plantings and will lead to a delayed harvest in major rice producing areas. The first main harvest normally would take place in February covering 65% of total annual production. Lack of rain, fertilizer and seed problems, and continuous land conversion will decrease harvested area by 2.5% to only 11.5 million ha in 2007 compared, to 11.8 million ha in 2006. In line with the decrease in harvested area, 2007 milled rice production is also estimated to decrease to 33.7 million tons from 34.96 million tons in 2006. It is expected that there will be no main harvest period in 2007 as the unusual weather patterns will bring on an irregular harvest period with substantial local variability. On January 9, 2007 President Yudhoyono held a limited cabinet meeting at the Ministry of Agriculture where increasing rice production by 2 million tons this year by providing free seeds to farmers was discussed. However, as past experience shows, lack of coordination between all rice stakeholders will make this goal difficult to achieve.
