Vietnam wins tender
Vietnam wins tender to sell 474,000 tonnes of rice to Philippines

Vietnam has won a bid to sell 474,000 tonnes of rice to the Philippines, according to the Vietnam Food Association (VFA).

The Philippines on January 16 invited bids for supplying some 500,000 tonnes of rice and Vietnam won contracts for most of the amount with the biding price of US $308 per tonne.

The rice is scheduled to be delivered to the buyers in April.

According to the Ministry of Trade, rice price in Vietnam has increased slightly since last week after traders started buying rice for their signed export contracts.

The Winter-Spring crop will be ready for harvest at the end of February; after which, the government’s ban on rice exported by private companies since November 2006, is expected to be lifted.

Vietnam’s rice exports this year are forecast to enjoy both favourable market and price factors as the world demand for rice is rising due to crop failures in many countries.

To fulfill the country’s target of exporting some 4-4.5 million tonnes of rice in 2007, the government has instructed the Ministry of Trade to adjust rice export volumes in each quarter with priority given to big contracts with high prices to traditional markets. As a result, Vietnamese rice will mainly be exported to Indonesia, Japan, Cuba, the Philippines and Malaysia in the first two months of this year.

With an increasing volume, Vietnam will continue to prioritise the Japan market and is estimated to export 150,000-170,000 tonnes to this market in 2007, up from 130,000 tonnes last year.
