Jordan To Import 500,000 Tons Of Wheat From Syria In 2007
The Jordanian government has reached agreement with Syria's state-owned Cereals Trade Corporation, whereby Jordan will import 500,000 tonnes of Syrian wheat at preferential prices in 2007, a senior official said Saturday.

"The quantity will cover 70 per cent of Jordan's annual wheat consumption currently running at about 720,000 tons," the Secretary General of the Ministry of Trade and Industy Montasser Oqlah said.

Syria has agreed to sell Jordan the first batch of the quantity, 100,000 tons of wheat, at a price of 191 dollars per ton free on board, he added.

"By buying this quantity from Syria, we make a saving of at least 7.5 million dollars, given the geographical proximity and the absence of storing expenses," he said.

Jordan bought 400,000 tons of Syrian wheat in 2006 also at preferential prices.

Jordan, a traditional client of US Red, hard winter wheat, decided to turn to Syria over the past couples of years for buying most of its wheat requirements due to the good quality of Syrian cereals and the rise of wheat prices on the world market, Oqlah said.

Jordan's local wheat production covers only 6 per cent of the country's needs.
