Thai Export and domestic prices increased significantly
Market Tone

Export and domestic prices increased significantly in anticipation of continued strong demand from Iran and Indonesia. Last week, the Thai Government concluded a government-to-government sale to Iran for 200,000 tons of 100 percent B grade white rice for delivery between February and May 2007. The pric es were settled at U.S. $320/MT, FOB. The Government is satisfied with these prices, as it was slightly higher than market prices. However, these prices are still unattractive for exporters, given the premium quality of the Iranian term, which is typically quoted at U.S. $5-7/MT higher than the market prices. Exporters are anticipating additional sales to Iran for up to 300,000 additional tons as Iran had originally planned to buy up to 500,000 tons in last weeks’ sale. Presently, most exporters are focusing on Indonesia’s inquiry for 15 percent grade white rice of around 500,000 tons for delivery in the first quarter of next year. However, exchange rate fluctuations remain a concern among exporters. Most quotations are based on 35.5 baht/$US, compared to the current exchange rate of 36.2 baht/$US.
