Basmati rice export up by 11 percent in six months
KARACHI (January 07 2007): The country's basmati rice export has registered 11 percent increase in the first half of the current fiscal year (July-December 2006) by touching $243.320 million mark against $219.757 million in the corresponding period last year. However, the exports of non-basmati varieties of rice have declined by 30 percent during the said period.

According to official figures available here, Pakistan exported 440,631 tonnes of basmati rice in the said period 9 percent higher than 403,863 tonnes rice exported in the same period last fiscal year 2005-06. Out of the total basmati rice export, 374.202 tonnes worth $220,817,203 were exported only from Karachi, 4,055 tonnes worth $2,171,192 from Lahore, while 62,374 tonnes worth $20,331,771 were exported from Quetta.

The export of non-basmati varieties of rice, however, declined by around 30 percent as 500,000 tonnes of Irri-6 and 100,000 tonnes of other varieties of rice worth $150 million were exported during the said period.

Abdul Aziz Maniya, chairman, Rice Exporters Association of Pakistan (Reap) told Business Recorder here on Saturday the increase in rice export was due to the bumper crop and good quality rice this year.

Middle East is the major market for Pakistani basmati rice, which imports over 50 percent of the total basmati rice. The basmati variety of rice is also exported to the USA and some European countries. Non-basmati varieties are exported to Sri Lanka and some African countries, including Kenya, South Africa, Mozambique, and other states. Pakistan exports its rice to 72 countries around the globe.

It is expected that the export of non-basmati rice would increase in the current month, said Maniya, adding: "We would be able to cover the shortfall of non-basmati varieties in the next few months."

The rice export had touched $1.3 billion during the last fiscal year and it is expected that it would make another record during the current fiscal year. "We would get the target of $1.5 billion of rice export this year as the bulk shipment of basmati variety starts after four to five months of the crop season because of its maturity", said former Reap chairman Abdul Rahim Janoo.

He said because of new market available for Pakistani rice and value addition on this commodity the target of $1.5 billion of rice export would be achieved easily this year.
