Wheat production in India
Wheat production in India, the world's second largest producer of the grain, may increase to 74 million tonnes next year on higher sowing, Agriculture and Food Minister Sharad Pawar said today.

"The wheat sowing season is progressing well. We will be able to produce 74 million tonnes," Pawar told reporters on the sidelines of the Indian Sugar Mills Association's 72th Annual General Meeting here.

Wheat output stood at about 69.5 million tonnes this year and the government had to import 5.5 million tonnes to meet the shortfall in procurement for Public Distribution System.

The current area under wheat cultivation was 15-20 per cent higher than the coverage during the year-ago period, he said, adding increase in coverage has given rise to the hopes of a higher output for the next Rabi marketing season.

Early sowing in states such as Punjab, Haryana, Madhya Pradesh, West Bengal, Bihar and Orissa has resulted in additional wheat acreage so far, he said.

"Till today weather is very conducive for wheat crop," he said and added the met department has termed current conditions as friendly for growth of the crop.

The minister, however, said wheat sowing should be completed by December 15 and any delay would result in a yield loss of 30 kg per hectare.

The central government had asked the states to ensure early sowing of wheat so as to avoid any loss arising out of the delay in sowing process, he added.
