Indonesia Govt to import 400,000 tons of rice
Jakarta (ANTARA News) - Vice President M Yusuf Kalla said the government planned to import 400,000 tons of rice to meet the people`s demand for rice and in view of the declining national stock of rice.

"If market operations will take a long time, a recount into the existing stock of rice would be necessary. And it can be rice imports from other countries," Kalla said here on Friday in response to the rising price of rice in some regions in Indonesia.

At present, the government is conducting a market operation to check the rising price of rice.

According to the vice president, 400,000 tons of rice to be imported is due to the fact that the rising demand for the staple is inseparable from the increase in country`s population which reached 1.5 percent annually.

In addition, by using some of the national rice stock for market operation may affect the stock of the staple. Each year, the government has kept one million tons of rice as national food supply.

In fact, some regions have increased the price of rice. Therefore the central government had to carry out market operations in a bid to lower the price of the commodity.

In commenting on the soaring price of rice in many regions, Agriculture Minister Anton Apriyantono meanwhile said it was inseparable from a decline in national rice stock.

He admitted that the government`s rice stock had also dropped because of the situation.

"At present we are only depending on the stock of this month`s production and carry it over from the previous month`s reserves," he said.

National Logistic Agency`s President Director Widjanarko Puspoyo said earlier that the price of rice was recently raised because of declining supplies from the rice producing centers.

"Nationally we have been facing a drought and a two-month delay in the planting season so that a lot of production leftovers had been consumed by the farmers to reduce supplies to the markets," he said.
