Vietnam permits 53000 mt for exports
HANOI, Dec 7 Asia Pulse - The Vietnamese Prime Minister has permitted the export of 53,000 tonnes of rice under contracts signed before Nov. 12, the day he called a halt on rice exports in a bid to ensure food security in the country.

He also allowed the loading of ships anchored in Vietnam's ports before Nov. 12 under contracts signed with Cuba and Indonesia. According to the Vietnam Food Association, nearly 116,000 tonnes of rice under such contracts have been loaded on ships bound for the two countries.

The permission will help businesses reduce storage costs. According to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, the rice prices in the southern rice bowl are stable and prices of exported rice have reduced. Meanwhile, the harvest will come one month later than usual. It is predicted that the shortage of rice in the domestic market will keep the rice prices in Vietnam high until the first quarter 2007.

The PM has allowed import of tax-exempted rice from Cambodia to increase the source to the Mekong delta region. He also asked the Trade Ministry coordinate with the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development and the Vietnam Food Association to keep a close watch on the rice market to make proper changes for plans for exports.

Vietnam expects to export 4.8 million tonnes of rice, lower than the planned 5 million tonnes and 5.2 million tonnes in 2005.
