Australian winter wheat crop down 61% from last year
Australia's Bureau of Agricultural and Resource Economics (ABARE) has slightly increased their production estimate for that nation's drought stricken 2006/07 wheat crop. ABARE sees the crop at 9.7 million tons, up from the October forecast of 9.5 million, but down 61% from the 2005/06 total of 25.1 million. The total winter grain production is pegged at 15.5 million tons or 62% less than last year and the poorest production total in more than a decade. Planted area for wheat was 14% less than a year ago at 11.1 million hectares. Barley production is seen at 3.7 million tons, 63% lower than 2005/06 and the canola harvest is expected to be the lowest in ten years at 426,000 tons. As of the end of October, grain stocks were 13.2 million tons (9.84 million wheat/2.16 million barley).

The primary growing regions of Australia were much hotter than normal and essentially bone dry from August to October of this year, the driest since 1900 for South Australia, the second driest on record for the Murray Darling Basin and Victoria and the third driest ever in New South Wales. For the rest of the Australian summer, ABARE expects warmer than normal temperatures for Queensland and the bulk of New South Wales, with a probability of 60% to 75%, while the probability of the summer low temperatures being above average for Queensland and the northern part of New South Wales is 60% to 85%. All areas of the nation need precipitation to recharge subsoil moisture and pasture growth has been severely limited in south east Queensland, New South Wales and South Australia.
