Thai Market Update
Domestic and export prices continued to increase due to tight supplies of new crops and more inquiries from foreign buyers. The Vietnamese rice export ban should continue to fuel Thai riMarket Tone Domestic and export prices for most grades of rice continued to increase in response to current tight supplies of new crops. Local rice millers reportedly faced difficulties in sourcing paddy due to harvest delays caused by flooding. Meanwhile, exporters received more inquiries from Middle East and African buyers who are unable to buy Vietnamese rice under the current rice export ban. However, they are hesitant to conclude deals as Thai rice is currently considered to be too expensive. Also, Thai rice exporters closely monitor the bidding prices of the government stocks’ tender, which are scheduled today (November 28, 2006). The tender included 192,200 tons of 2004/05 fragrant paddy for exports or domestic sales, and 200,000 tons of 2005/06 white rice (5% grade) for exports. Exports of these tenders are required to be shipped within 30 days after delivery from the government warehouses. Many exporters are expected to participate in the tender, particularly for white rice. Meanwhile, fragrant paddy tender is reportedly less attractive for exporters as most of paddy is from unqualified stocks. As a result, fragrant paddy bidding prices will likely be lower than the market prices. The tender results are expected to ease market prices by releasing more supply of white rice into the market.ce exports into 2007.
