Japan, Korea, China Set to Boost Asean's Emergency Rice Reserve
Nov. 22 (Bloomberg) -- Japan, South Korea and China may join Asean's emergency rice reserve program, boosting by more than five times the stocks available to the group's members should they be affected by calamities, an official said.

The reserve may be increased to as much as 500,000 metric tons next year from 87,000 tons this year, Gregorio Tan, the Philippine National Food Authority administrator, said today in an interview. The Philippines holds this year's rotating chairmanship of the ten-nation grouping.

Global rice production may increase to 634 million tons in 2006, the United Nations said on Apr. 7. Still, inventories of the world's most important crop are near a 26-year low and will drop further, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

``The contribution from China, South Korea and Japan will be a big help for countries devastated by calamities,'' Tan said.

The reserve, which was established in 1979, is made up of rice stocks held in each of the member countries that are earmarked for emergency distribution within Asean should the need arise, according to information on the group's Web site. The rice may be accessed by countries that require food after an ``extreme and unexpected natural or man-made calamity.''

Asean, which stands for the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, comprises Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, Myanmar, Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam, Brunei and the Philippines. Thailand and Vietnam are the world's top two rice exporters.
