Ukraine's PM furnishes public apology to local, foreign grain traders
Ukraine's Prime Minister Viktor Yanukovych has furnished a public apology to local and foreign grain traders for the grain exports' restrictions enforced last month.

"We're sorry that this happened," he said in an interview with Gazeta 2000 weekly.

He admitted the methods used to contain grain exports were against the market principles. However, Yanukovych noted this was the only way to proceed under the given circumstances.

"Yes, these are non-market methods, however, we were about to lose the grain they wanted to export from the country. And it was wheat," the premier said.

He said that had the government failed to take grain exports under its control and permitted unrestrained grain exports, the price of bread in the country would have doubled.

At the same time, Yanukovych expressed hope that the government keep its good relations with grain traders. He assured them that if the state's strategic grain reserve was filled to capacity, grain traders would be allowed to export all available surpluses.

Ukraine's biggest grain traders estimate their losses at tens of millions of dollars, saying that only the daily demurrage totals round USD 35,000 per vessel.

According to experts, losses of producers who cannot sell their grain have reached several billons of hryvnias.
