Ottawa says CWB wheat monopoly to stay for 2007-08
WINNIPEG, Manitoba, Nov 3 (Reuters) - The Canadian Wheat Board will retain its monopoly on wheat sales through the 2007-08 crop year, which begins Aug. 1, Agriculture Minister Chuck Strahl said on Friday.

"People who are planting a crop this spring, they should count on marketing that wheat crop through the Canadian Wheat Board," Strahl told reporters at a news conference.

The CWB, one of the world's largest grain marketers, holds a monopoly on sales of western Canadian wheat, durum and barley to millers, maltsters and export markets.

The Conservative government has promised to end that monopoly, commissioning a task force that earlier this week recommended new legislation this spring to make sales through the CWB voluntary.

"The task force ... is not my marching orders, it's just advice to the government," Strahl said.

"Right now, the only thing that's on the shelf or in the window ... is a plebiscite on barley," he said.

"The rest of (the CWB) stays the same. We can talk about next steps some other time."

A Canadian Wheat Board official said he was pleased to hear Strahl say that the wheat monopoly would stay intact for the near term.
